Garlic supports liver

Fermented garlic supports the liver by adult men and women which have a mild liver damage. Korean researchers have found 80 volunteers for a study who had an elevated GGT level, but without a severe liver disease. A specific garlic supplement, known as aged garlic extract, lowered the GGT level from 90 to 80 (units per liter), while the level in the placebo group increased. The ALT and ASP levels also reduced, but only for ALT the decrease was significant. The researchers also found a slight improvement in fatigue.

GGT, ALT and ASP are three liver enzymes whose concentration increases in the blood when there is a liver damage. Alcohol and high-calorie nutrition are the main causes of liver damage (especially alcoholic and non-alcoholic fatty liver) and are risk factors for severe liver disease. The normal level of GGT is between 11 and 75 units per liter; fermented garlic does not completely solve the liver damage.

The study had 66 participants who took 20 grams of fermented garlic or placebo twice a day. After 6 and 12 weeks, blood tests and surveys were conducted.
